self control
i'm gonna keep this short because i'm typing with my left hand. my arm was broken last night by a student with no self control. i wasn't more than 5-10 minutes into sparring when i was kicked full force in my arm. (and it wasn't even a good technique) so i yelled an obsenity in front of small children and left the floor. we put ice on it, but i eventually was taken to the hospital and x ray'd. i am now splinted from wrist to shoulder and i will have to get a cast put on next week. my ulna is broken. the er doc who also is a fellow karate student told me it is called a nightstick fracture. this is so unfair. i passed my test at least- renshi says its an automatic pass if you end up at the hospital.
my sparring partner-who is 15 yrs was taught a lesson about self control after that. he's gotta be hurting today because he was SCHOOLED last night. heh heh heh..

OUCH! I'm always scared of sparring the teenagers...seems they rarely understand the concept of a "controlled environment." But I very much enjoy watching them learn a lesson. I hope you make a speedy recovery.
Cripes! Take it easy as you heal up! I'm sorry to hear that you got hurt so badly. How ironic, but we were just getting this lesson in our specialty sparring class just today. Our instructor was making a special point to show us control, and how we don't need to use brute force power to make contact -- or for that matter, for tournament sparring you don't even need to make contact. The class had adult 2nd degree BB all the way down to orange belts in there, so it was a good lesson that the head instructor is trying to teach. His point, which is a good one, is that fighting is not the same as sparring/sport sparring, and should be treated as such. Sounds like this 15 year old definitely needs some schooling in this matter! Get better soon! :-)
Well, that stinks. I'm sorry that teenager broke your arm. Once I broke my foot while sparring with a black belt. I didn't affect me though because it was a hairline fracture.
Ouch! I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you are feeling better soon. I'm glad to hear that the student was schooled. He He He...
I really dislike fighting the lower ranks for this very reason, especially the boys. They don't have control, and most of them are out to prove something, so they want to fight rather than spar. This is one reason I don't spar that much in my dojo.
You have my sympathy for your injury. May you heal quickly, and be right back into doing what you love to do.
I always get concerned whenever I see the words x-ray, self control, and hospital in the same post. What's amazing is that I just commented on an aikido site about sparring related injuries in karate. I really do hope you recover quickly and painlessly. Understand that these things happen from time to time in the martial arts. Eventually, try to forgive your 15 yr. old sparring partner for this mishap, for your sake as well as his.
Oh my gosh - I missed this until now - OUCH!!!
And I'm with Beth. The kid is a moron. I'm so sorry - get well soon!!!
Holy Cow! Now I feel like a loser for complaining about my bumps and bruises. You're the stuff! Honestly even with a lot of control boo-boos do happen; I just hate my personal oversensitivity afterwords - alwasy worried about it happening again. Get better soon.
I loved the bad word in front of the kids!
Oh my gosh! I feel for you because I know EXACTLY how you feel. It isn't fair. I am angry for you that it happened at all, much less because of someone elses lack of control. You post kind of brought it all back to me about how I felt then.
Ouch...
hope you get better soon.
How awful! I hope you're feeling better and I do hope the 15 yr old with no control was indeed "schooled" as you put it.
