oh well

Well, I went to class last night. I did not spar, though. It was a great class anyway, mostly working combinations with a partner. Then they did regular sparring towards the end of the class. They combined the teen class with the adult class so it was pretty crowded. I worked with a woman who just got her green belt. I love seeing that there are more and more adults taking karate. My dojo always encourages the parents to start taking classes, they usually offer a free 3 months to parents of students. Right now there is a group of maybe 10-15 parents who are now green belts who all started as a "parents class" a couple years ago. Its going to be awesome to see them all get their black belts together.
My little arm breaker was in class last night too. So was my son. My son cracked him in the head with a ridge hand and said.."thats for my mom"
what a good boy...he's been waiting for an opportunity for that since the night my arm was broken.

I hope your son didn't get in trouble for that, but in my heart I have a warm feeling.

no one got in trouble, the kid had his head gear on. and besides, I don't think there is one instructor in there who doesn't feel he deserved it. He has sucker punched and kicked many students with that eddie haskel smirk on his face. Karma

I guess I have a different mindset than many.. It hurts my heart to think that your son felt the need for revenge. The way that I view it, the student that broke your arm, and who rejoices in the pain of others needs to be guided into the knowledge that with power comes responsibility. Yes.. he deserves a good "thumping", but more in a way to educate him in the effects of his own actions, and attitude. I would rather use the dojo to help someone become LESS of a bully than to create more of a bully within them.

It's hard for me to rejoice at the thought that your son developed a hatred, and anger towards another person.. although I can see how justified it is... Revenge only builds walls, Forgiveness builds bridges, Education builds understanding.

I'm glad to read that you are getting back into things! That's pretty cool about your group of Green Belt parents.. a lot of parents just think it's for the kids. I guess I started backwards, lol.

Glad to see you posting!

Mirielle- My son does not "hate" the boy who broke my arm. In fact, they have a good time together and have been taking class together for 8 years.they both earned their 1st degree Jr black belts together several yrs ago. There was no "anger", no "need for revenge". I don't consider either one to be a bully..one just needs to learn self control, and one was just looking out for his mom. I'm sorry you interpreted it the way you did. everyone had a smile on their face- including my arm breaker.
no big deal.

I'm I reading this right - 3 free months of lessons for the parents of students? That's a great deal! Having a large adult class always looks good in a karate school.

john- thats right. Renshi really encourages the adults to take karate and is very supportive and flexible regarding limitations that our adult bodies have.
we also have a class called "we can do" for students who have had traumatic brain injuries. This class is taught by a critical care nurse who is also a nidan.
